Wisconsin Traffic Attorneys
Wisconsin speeding tickets and other moving violations are often met with stiff fines. In addition to paying the cost of the ticket, convictions for moving traffic violations can rack up demerit points quickly, which can result in suspension or revocation of your driving privileges not to mention increased insurance premiums. Losing a driver’s license can represent a tremendous hardship by affecting one’s ability to get to work, go to school, or maintain important relationships.
Frequently assessed points for regular drivers include 4 points for inattentive driving including texting or talking on a cell phone; 3 points for not giving a proper signal such as a blinker; 3, 4 or 6 points for speeding depending on how much you exceed the limit. On any given day, many drivers can be found violating all three categories simultaneously just driving back and forth to work.
It is no wonder that the demerit points accumulate quickly. However the the consequences of too many points can be dire. If you accumulate anywhere from 12 – 15 points, your licensed can be suspended for two months. If you accumulate 30 or more, you will be looking at a one year suspension, although just twelve points accumulated in a one year period will also result in the loss of driving privileges.
Criminal traffic offenses, like driving on a suspended license, hit and run, and drunk driving are criminal charges themselves, and require special legal handling to protect your rights and try to keep you from ending up with a permanent criminal record.
It is worthwhile to seek legal help in order to reduce points against your license (which can accumulate for years), secure dismissals, or, in a worst-case scenario, prevent your driver’s license from being suspended or revoked. If your traffic violation results in a criminal act, legal representation is a must.
