Over the weekend, Milwaukee law enforcement officers continued their aggressive Driving Under the Influence (DUI) initiative, which resulted in five Wisconsin OWI DUI arrests. Two of the subjects were arrested for repeat drunk driving and three were first time offenders.
First time offenders may incur a fine anywhere from $150 - $300 plus substantial court costs and will likely have their drivers license revoked for 6 to 9 months. If the driver’s BAC test registered a .15 or higher, the driver may also be ordered to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle. First time offenses will probably not result in jail time, with a few exceptions.
For those who are repeat offenders, the consequences are more serious. Fines increase dramatically depending on the number of drunk driving incidences, as does the possibility of incarceration. Loss of license, installation of an interlock device, and points on a driver’s license may result.
Whether it is a first or subsequent offense, causing an injury while intoxicated can result in additional penalties as can driving with a minor or pregnant woman in the car. The consequences for inflicting serious injury or death can be severe.
