City leaders have turned to high school students to get the word out to peers about the dangers of drunk driving.
Using the twitter hashtag #owwhy (ow-why?), students at Green Bay Southwest High School distributed a public service announcement regarding OWI, which they wrote and produced in an effort to raise awareness among their fellow twitter users.
The effort follows a fatal OWI crash near the high school, which resulted in the formation of a drunk driving task force who came up with the idea of a video contest for high school students. Participants were asked to create PSA’s to encourage their peers not to drink and drive.
The campaign did more than impact those on the Twittersphere; the process of making the film depicting a drunk driving accident apparently had a sobering effect on the students, too. One teacher observed that “You could see the wheels turning that this could be real.”
Wisconsin has one of the highest rates of drunk driving in the nation and, unfortunately, many underage minors and other young people do not realize the consequences they may face if they are arrested and charged with a Wisconsin OWI or a more serious crime in the event of an injury accident. If you or a family member has been charged with an OWI crime in Wisconsin, it is important to get the help of an experienced drunk driving criminal defense lawyer.
