Milwaukee law enforcement and prosecutors have asked a judge to allow them to seize and freeze cell phone numbers of alleged drug traffickers to slow the flow of illegal drugs.
They complain that when they make a drug arrest, dealers simply transfer their numbers to a new phone and business continues as usual.
Law enforcement agencies believe that disrupting cell phone service, including the ability to send or receive calls or text messages, will result in a reduction in Milwaukee drug trafficking and prevent a those arrested from funding a legal battle from behind bars.
The first such case of seizing and freezing a cell phone in Wisconsin - perhaps in the nation - was filed earlier this year to shut down a number used by an alleged heroin ring, all of whom were charged with racketeering and drug dealing.
The related search warrant argued that the phone number was being used for criminal acts and therefore could be seized under state law.
